Antarctic organisations are calling on early-career researchers and scientists to apply for this year’s Antarctic Fellowship – open today.
The awards, granted annually by the International Association of Antarctica Tour Operators (IAATO), the Council of Managers of National Antarctic Programs (COMNAP) the Scientific Committee on Antarctic Research (SCAR) and the Commission for the Conservation of Antarctic Marine Living Resources (CCAMLR).
The Antarctic Fellowships are an investment in the professional development of talented early career scientists and researchers and aim to strengthen international capacity and cooperation in the spirit of the Antarctic Treaty.
Amanda Lynnes, Director of Environment and Science Coordination at IAATO, said: “We’ve been introduced to a host of outstanding researchers over the years, and it has been a privilege to support them with their professional development.
“We’re delighted to be opening up applications again this year and would urge early-career professionals not to miss out on this career-building opportunity.”
IAATO has funded eight fellows since 2019, including most recently Leena Riekkola who is focusing on a circumpolar analysis of the movements and habitat use patterns of southern right whale populations and Miguel Ángel Bascur who is seeking to identify how blue carbon can act as a natural regulatory factor against climate change.
COMNAP is also offering a fellowship with funding of up to USD $15,000 for 2024. Both the IAATO and COMNAP fellowships enable early-career persons to work with a project team from another country, creating new opportunities and often partnerships that last for many years and over many Antarctic field seasons. The deadline for IAATO and COMNAP fellowship applications is May 31, 2024.
Update: Antarctic Fellowship deadline is extended until June 15th, 2024
SCAR will be offering 4-5 fellowships of up to USD $15,000 each for 2024. And CCAMLR’s Scientific Scholarship Scheme will be providing funding of up to A$30,000 to assist early-career scientists to participate in the work of the CCAMLR Scientific Committee and its working groups over a period of two years. The deadline for applications to SCAR is July 31 and CCAMLR August 31.
All opportunities are being jointly promoted by the organisations involved. For more information, visit: SCAR, COMNAP, IAATO and CCAMLR.
