Field guides and visitors to Antarctica now have a powerful new tool at their disposal for exploring the continent responsibly. The International Association of Antarctica Tour Operators (IAATO) has launched the IAATO Antarctic Expedition App, which allows users to access essential information and resources from the Antarctic Treaty System and IAATO – on and offline.
This new digital tool replaces the previous Polar Guide: Antarctica app and is available for both iOS and Android devices through the App Store and Google Play. It provides information found in IAATO’s Field Operations Manual, including practical guidance on wildlife interactions, biosecurity procedures, and other best practices, helping users meet their obligations under the Antarctic Treaty in one of the planet's most remote ecosystems.
“The new app is specifically designed for the realities of working in and visiting the world's most remote and challenging environment,” said Stella Giangarra, IAATO Operations Project Manager.

“By incorporating feedback from our members’ field staff along with modern app functionality, we’re making it easier than ever for guides to access essential resources from our Field Operations Manual and for visitors to understand how to explore the region responsibly.”
The app’s launch is the culmination of a year and a half -long project, developed in partnership with New York-based developer Intellectsoft, driven by feedback from IAATO member field staff. Requests for improved mobile accessibility, a refreshed user interface, and enhanced search capabilities have been addressed with a clean, intuitive design and a tag-based layout for quick navigation.
Key Features include:
- Offline access to content
- Enhanced search for faster and more precise results
- Favourites and tagging for quick reference
- Automatic and manual sync to keep materials current
Polar guides will have personalised logins to access the full Field Operations Manual. Antarctic visitors will find targeted Antarctic Treaty System and IAATO resources to support their responsibilities while enjoying their visit.

In addition to protocols, the app connects users to IAATO’s core mission, providing insights into the significance of landing sites, tips for safe and respectful exploration, and ways to participate in ongoing conservation efforts.
“All IAATO members are committed to safe and environmentally responsible travel in accordance with the Antarctic Treaty,” Giangarra added. “We’re proud to offer this efficient, fast, and offline-capable guide just in time for the new season in support of that mission.”
The IAATO Antarctic Expedition App is available for free download now on the App Store and Google Play.
