IAATO Welcomes Daven Hafey as New Director of Operations
The International Association of Antarctica Tour Operators (IAATO) is excited to announce the appointment of Daven Hafey as its new director of operations. Hafey brings nearly two decades of experience in polar, maritime, and field environments, along with a strong commitment to responsible tourism in the Antarctic region.
IAATO's membership comprises over 100 respected companies from around the world, all dedicated to protecting and preserving Antarctica's unique environment while delivering enriching, education-centred expeditions to the region. In his new role, the director of operations will help ensure that all IAATO-required or recommended policies, programs, and procedures can be effectively integrated into the work plans of tour operators.
The position also involves overseeing the development and delivery of operational tools and programs, such as IAATO’s Field Operations Manual, IAATO Antarctic Expedition App, and database. Hafey will also lead communications with the association's members regarding operational practices and codes of conduct.
He said: "The polar regions have profoundly influenced my personal life and professional career for nearly two decades, and I am honoured to join IAATO in supporting its mission of promoting responsible travel to Antarctica.
"Having spent many seasons in the field, I have witnessed the profound wildness, interconnection, and fragility of these environments firsthand. I look forward to collaborating with our members and partners to ensure that future generations can experience Antarctica with the same sense of wonder and respect that has inspired me, while always prioritising the preservation of this extraordinary continent."
Hafey’s journey into the polar regions began in Alaska’s North Slope in 2005, which ignited his lifelong passion for both the Arctic and Antarctica. He joined the polar expedition industry in 2015, where he spent 10 years at sea, completing over 150 voyages in both regions. His various roles included Zodiac driver and guide, senior staff trainer, assistant expedition leader, and expedition leader. This extensive fieldwork has provided him with a unique understanding of the seasonal rhythms of Antarctica, from spring to fall.
On land, Hafey has assumed key roles in operations and product development, further refining his expertise in polar travel and logistics. His earlier career includes positions with the U.S. National Park Service, ecological research in Alaska and Zambia, and freshwater habitat management and policy work in Juneau, Alaska. Hafey also holds a U.S. Coast Guard Master 100 Tons credential and has logged over 2,000 days as captain of vessels along the west coast of North America, focusing on marine wildlife, including humpback and killer whales, in both tourism and collaborative research settings.
“Daven’s extensive operational experience and leadership in both the Arctic and Antarctica will be an invaluable asset to IAATO as the association evolves,” said Lisa Kelley, IAATO Executive Director. “We are thrilled to welcome him to the team.”
